Transforming the Innovation Opportunity into Legal Practice: the ING Journey

ING’s in-house legal team are key contributors to the banks two important strategic pillars – “Innovation” and ‘’Digital First’’. To compliment the company’s cultural transformation, ING’s legal team team are utilising:

  • Boot camps

  • Agile Methodology

  • Accelerators

  • Hackathons

Rein Graat will share how his team is using these tools and enablers to make innovation sticky at ING. He will specifically share real practical examples that include an Artificial Intelligence pilot scheme, document automation and the use of virtual teams.

Getting a Practical Start with Artificial Intelligence

In-house lawyers and law firms are bombarded with conflicting messages on artificial intelligence – one day it’s the end of the profession as we know it, the next it is ‘all hype’. With such significant long-term potential but also short-term uncertainty, the challenge is how to make a start in a practical way, to capture benefits and learn for the future.

Sam will share the G+T story – including hits and misses – in making a start on automation, expert systems and machine learning and look at practical future applications for AI in the legal profession.

Sam Nickelss is COO for Gilbert + Tobin, a key player in the Australian legal market who, under the banner of g+t are at the forefront of innovation strategy in the legal profession.

Technology as a Tool to Raise your Organisation’s Legal IQ

Troy Swan leads an award winning legal team that has used technology as a way to raise the Legal IQ of Staples and create a commercially savvy salesforce and organisation. As the General Counsel and Company Secretary of one of the largest e-commerce retailers in Australia he has embraced digital, and uses an array of digital tools to better enable the Staples business teams and foster an entrepreneurial culture. Learn how this digital transformation has resulted in business wide cultural change, from risk aversion and avoidance to tolerance and management, which has contributed to the bottom line.

Bridging the Gap Between the Traditional Legal Services and Disruptive Technology

An engaging discussion between four change agents, with a combined experience of 70+ years, on their journey from traditional to innovative in the legal industry. Hear how a Knowledge Manager from Allens, IBM’s general counsel, and legal technology gurus from Ashurst and Corrs have challenged the status quo and mobilised change in their organisations.

  • Leading the way in legal services innovation – threats or opportunities

  • Planning your marathon - identifying change needs and selecting your priorities

  • Building a business case for innovation and getting buy-in from your stakeholders

  • Articulating and communicating a clear vision and strategy for innovation

  • Identifying change resisters and addressing their concerns

The Beauty of Innovation at L’Oréal

The rapid rise of technology allows for huge potential for legal services; that is to deliver more with less for our growing number of stakeholders, with speed, and in an innovative fashion. Hear how L’Oréal’s legal team have tied this to the company’s strategic objectives, especially around Beauty for All and its ambition to digitally transform the beauty industry.

By embracing technology the ANZ legal function has been enabled to “go digital” and partner with the business in a way that is both L’Oréal and beauty industry leading. Understand how the team are embracing a value measurement tool as well as automation to enhance the delivery of its legal support to its stakeholders.

Open Innovation – Creating a Strategy that Benefits Clients, the Firm and the Industry

Purchasing and adopting products from vendors who have not understood the exact business requirements can often frustrate successful implementation and uptake. Over the last decade Corrs Chambers Westgarth, faced with this issue, have transformed their business from that of a passive consumer of technology into a developer and vendor - through its Open Innovation approach.

Graeme Grovum, a leader at Corrs, will explain how combining internal legal expertise with complementary external knowledge to create new products, have benefitted clients, lawyers, as well as the broader legal community. Hear how Corrs’ solutions have reconciled the legal industry’s ‘requirement for certainty’ with the unavoidably fluid development process and added additional revenue streams for the firm.

How Legal Technology is Adapting to Meet Evolving Consumer Demands

Hear how consumer trends are being reflected in the way legal services are offered across the profession. The session will detail examples of changing technological innovations through adopting a number of different work practices, including:

  • Integration of "enhanced intelligence" systems and other systems (for example "intelligent search" systems);

  • The possible use of system such as "ROSS" (based on IBM's Watson) and other machine learning systems; and

  • Project management systems and workflow systems,

This is with the aim of not only improving the quality of legal work but also reflecting client demands for reduced costs.

Getting Real Value From Technology Spend – the User Experience Journey from a Global Law Firm

Technology spending has increased year-over-year, yet much of the benefit doesn’t materialise. Both the lack of adoption and the limited use of applications and technology tools have marginalised implementation success. Importantly, this impacts the ability to get funding for future projects.

Dougless Cadell is the global leader of innovation projects at one of the largest law firms in the world.  He will explore the challenges that Mayer Brown faced, and show you the practical things they did (and you can do!) to change the user experience into a positive opportunity for driving adoption and generating real value from technology.

Doug is a veteran CIO, legal industry technologist and internationally recognised speaker and writer on law firm and law department technology, and its best use. He has over 30 years’ experience in finance, operations and management, and in leading the technology efforts of a variety of organisations, including mid-sized and large law firms and a governmental law department. In 2004 he was honoured as IT Director of the Year by New York based Law Technology News and in January 2009 he was recognised by the Legal Technology Awards in London as International IT Director of the Year.

Building a Buying Environment – Psychological Strategies to Build Client Loyalty Online

Many law firms are keen to implement technology and be at the ‘cutting edge’ but they fail to understand how and why customers make purchasing decisions, choose them over other firms and have a need to connect.  This leads to poor customer experience, lack of stickiness and loyalty and low ROI on technology investment.  Integrating psychology into the client experience creates the connection they crave and lowers risk as the lawyer can communicate in the client’s own pattern pre-empting issues and addressing them before they arise. This creates a highly personalised, low cost method for getting the best from the client and creates a raving fan.

This session will cover:

  • How clients connect and make buying decisions in the digital space

  • Why technology alone is not enough and won’t create stickiness

  • Understanding psychology behind the 4 key communication patterns (DISC profiling)

  • Using psychology to communicate with clients in their specific language

  • Advantages: Reduce Risk, Create Loyalty, Pre-empt Communication Issues

  • How to engage and teach DISC in a legal practice environment

Embracing True Cloud in Legal: From Years Of Hype To Practical Reality

Whilst many of us now find ourselves debating the sexier topic of legal transformation, cloud-adoption is one of the key foundational layers which underpin these innovative and digital delivery outcomes we're all pursuing.

After years of talking about cloud and skirting around the edges, law firms must overcome perceived barriers and start embracing the future IT service layer or risk being left behind, continuing to amass costly and inflexible technical debt. This presentation will discuss the most pragmatic way to overcome these barriers and make a strong start towards a long term, successful cloud journey.

Creating a Mindset of Innovation for Lawyers

Innovation is fundamental to a legal future and needs to be at the heart of the business.  Fearlessness is fundamentally important to be creative and being constantly restless about wanting to do better.  You can create a culture which encourages people to be fearless and wanting to try new ways of working.  If you castigate people for making mistakes, then they stop making them they become safer.  Sinicism is the death of creativity.  You need to keep you people positive and engaged.  You can invent the future.  Stunning ideas which actually change the way people work, feel or think.

  • Starting with culture – creating innovation appetite

  • The practical steps in a long journey

  • Using design thinking to solve problems differently

  • Giving ideas oxygen and experimentation

  • Introducing AI to a culture who is hungry

  • Sharing the journey

Empowering Teams to Articulate the Value That Legal Brings to Their Company

Legal innovators are challenging lawyers to implement technology solutions so that lawyers can focus on doing the ‘high value’ work. However, many struggle to articulate what the ‘high value’ work is that will replace these current ways of working. This can cause innovations to be perceived as a threat to the profession. Engagement with these innovation opportunities will be higher if lawyers can articulate the ‘high value’ work that they do for their company, and so more readily embrace how innovation can benefit their employer as well as increase the value of their own evolving practice.

  • The current state: how do we describe what legal does?

  • The place of legal in the ecosystem of an organisation

  • The skills in the lawyer’s toolkit

  • The technician lawyer and the artist lawyer – when do we play each role?

  • Articulating the value proposition

Three key take-away points;

  1. Transformation is more likely to happen if the team are inspired by a vision for the legal practice

  2. The vision of ‘being able to focus on high value work’ will be more powerful if lawyers can understand how it will empower them in practice

  3. How leaders can encourage their teams to articulate that value

Emerging Technology Roundtable Discussion

If it’s on the thin line between leading-edge and bleeding-edge, or if it's something everyone's heard of but no one's tried yet, it'll be up for discussion during this emerging technologies roundtable.  Come with your questions, opinions and insights and your voice, to discuss the Internet of Things ("Smart" everything); blockchain, smart contracts and cryptocurrencies; machine learning; augmented reality; self-driving cars and everything robotic. Be prepared to participate in what will be a spirited discussion about future technologies that will affect the legal industry in myriad ways.

Turning Innovative Ideas into Results: Why Collaboration is Critical to Success

In 2016 Telstra Legal partnered with HSF to run a series of design thinking workshops and innovation sprints to tackle a set of productivity opportunities.  This collaboration resulted in a saving of more than 40,000 lawyer hours and recognition by Financial Times of Telstra Legal as Asia Pac’s most innovative legal department for 2016.  Hear how these results were achieved and why collaboration was a critical element of success.

Innovation is Not About Technology, it's About Business

Legal business is changing and competitive “advantage” is a moving paradigm.  The pressure is on for IT to more fully integrate into the business – gaining and retaining clients.  Implementing new technologies and innovations that meet the business imperative to enhance the “customer” experience will be more likely to achieve acceptance and success.  Learn how Mayer Brown and other G100 law firms are making IT part of their revenue stream by studying the business and not just the technology.  This session will share examples of building credibility within the firm and with clients, and working IT into the fabric of the firm’s business strategy.

Security Awareness Roundtable Discussion

With all the press on Russian hacking of the U.S. Election and breaches being reported in law firms around the world, it's time to elevate cybersecurity from a niche to a top-level concern.  In this fast moving roundtable session we will discuss the implications of changing the culture in the firm related to Cybersecurity, and Security Awareness.  We will share ideas on how to start and continue to change the culture in a firm, how to get senior level commitment and support, why security is not just and IT thing, and how to broaden awareness of the security risks in a firm.  There will be tangible takeaways for you if you participate in the discussion.

Practical Experience from Running Concurrent Innovation Programmes – Partners, Associates and Graduates

It’s now well settled that the legal sector is facing considerable disruption and that firms that don’t innovate risk failure or irrelevance.  But how do traditional law firms overcome tradition and structural issues that impede the development of an innovation culture?  At Maddocks, we recently launched 3 different innovation programmes at different levels of the business to attempt to kick start our innovation strategy and to create an innovation culture.

  • At Partner level – we initiated a number of intense and focused projects to be delivered within 45 days and designed to create a new service or process in each legal department within the firm.

  • At Senior Associate and Special Counsel level – we gave our teams half day immersive design thinking training and presented them with different problems within the firm and asked them to create new solutions for those problems.

  • At Graduate level – we took them off-site for 2 days for design thinking training and then gave them a series of problems which they were asked to solve by designing new products for our clients. The Graduates were split into teams and then mentored over 10 weeks to allow them to develop and refine their ideas before they pitched them to our Innovation Committee “Shark Tank” style.

Electronic Hearings and Litigating in the Digital Age – Working Smarter Not Harder

As clients continue to demand faster, more efficient delivery of legal services, embracing innovation in litigation has never been more important. This is particularly true during the final stages of litigation yet making the most of the opportunities technology presents can still be a challenge in a risk averse legal profession.

In this session Gemma will allay your fears about electronic hearings and will provide examples of how her team has been able to make the most of technology to the benefit of her clients, including tips, traps and insights gained from her experience in international arbitrations.

Leading/Mentoring the Next Generation Roundtable Discussion

With all the pressures facing legal organisations in the context of constant change, developing a pipeline of emerging legal technology leaders, putting them on a track to leadership through mentoring and growing their leadership skills, is imperative.  We will discuss effective ways to identify and mentor future leaders, and ponder the place of critical thinking, emotional intelligence, feedback and empathy in driving change, innovation and helping grow legal organisations.

At the Intersection of Technology & Future Workforce Models – What Does Innovation Mean in Practice?

AI, predictive coding, machine learning, disruption and innovation – we are all familiar with the newly popular buzz terms in the market but what do they actually look like in application? What we are currently seeing more of is the incremental transformations in areas like the way documents are reviewed and the way legal risk is assessed.

Through Allens a+ we have brought together teams of Lawyers, Project Managers, Technologists and an alternative Lawyer workforce and combined them with the use of sophisticated AI technologies such as predictive coding, machine learning, and expert systems. These new ways of working are challenging traditional models of legal service delivery, automated services and improved accuracy to give our clients greater value for money.

  2. A 5 step blueprint for transforming contracting at any organisation

  3. Change management fundamentals for legal departments

Pricing Roundtable Discussion

There are many challenges and pragmatic solutions around developing agile, profitable and innovative pricing strategies. The growing momentum behind time recording as an agent of change, with improved data capture and sophisticated analytics, is affording firms hard evidence of the costs of service delivery.  How is your firm using data capture and analytics to serve as a springboard for competitive pricing and intelligent resourcing? How are you embracing technology, culture and process (real-time costs monitoring) to drive this initiative? How are you using LPM and is it effective?  How do you get IT, finance, LPM, BD and fee earning professionals aligned on the criticality of understanding where costs, profits and value lie? Come with your questions, experience and insights to participate in what will be a lively discussion.
